Part 28
Scripture
1 John 1.7
NKJ 1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light
as He is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son
cleanses us from all sin.
But if we walk in the light
as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son
cleanses us from all sin.
But look for contrast... i.e., not in the light
whenever it occurs that look for indicator i.e.... how to know .... “in the light”
we are walking about
look for figure
in the light
just as
look for manner... i.e., in what way?
He is in the light,
1 LOOK FOR FIGURE
we are walking about ( living out our beliefs)
( living out our faith)
( practicing our beliefs)
we are walking about
look for figure
Which thoughts are the least abstract, and the most practical?
in the light
in the light ( in the truth)
( in the presence of God)
( in the approval of God)
( in the holiness of God)
but whenever we are practicing our beliefs in the holiness of God,
2 LOOK FOR THE CONTRAST
i.e., not in the light
But
NKJ 1 John 1:5
This is the message
which we have heard from Him
and declare to you,
that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
God and darkness are mutually exclusive.
Darkness cannot be in the presence of God.
Darkness is a descriptive quality for ungodliness.
NKJ 1 John 1:6
If we say that we have fellowship with Him,
and walk in darkness,
we lie and do not practice the truth.
One can walk in darkness, or walk in the light.
Walking in darkness involves living out lies.
Walking in darkness is living outside God’s truth.
in darkness( in an ungodly manner)
We should not be practicing our beliefs
in an ungodly manner,
but whenever we are practicing our beliefs
in the holiness of God,
3 LOOK FOR THE INDICATOR
NKJ 1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Indicators of truly walking about in the light( in the holiness of God):
we experience true fellowship( koinonia)
we have a clear conscience( sense of sins cleared away)
NKJ Hebrews 9:14
how much more shall the blood of Christ,
who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself
without spot to God, cleanse your conscience
from dead works to serve the living God?
More comprehensive…
NKJ Hebrews 9:14
how much more [than the blood of animals] shall the blood of Christ,
who through( by means of) the eternal Spirit
offered Himself without spot( faultless( sinless))
to God, (will, future tense) cleanse your conscience
from dead works (in order) to (get into) serving
the living God?
how much more [than the blood of animals] shall the blood of Christ, who through( by means of) the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot( faultless( sinless)) to God, (will, future tense) cleanse your conscience from dead works (in order) to (get into) serving the living God?
NEWS FLASH!
The idea of “cleansing” the believer from sin is something Christ does presently in our behalf, based upon His accomplishments in the past! And that which is cleansed is our conscience( sin awareness organ), which when properly informed by God’s truth, enables us to sense the “dirt( uncleanness)” of our sins in the form of guilt.
Is John addressing saints or sinners?
NKJ 1 John 1:8-10
8 If we say that we have no sin,
we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
9 He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned,
we make Him a liar,
and His word is not in us.
Again…
NKJ 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses( clears) us from all sin.
Indicators of truly walking about in the light( in the holiness of God):
we experience true fellowship( koinonia)
we have a clear conscience( sense of sins cleared away)
Sin always leaves a dirty residue behind…
NKJ Hebrews 10:2
For then would they not have ceased to be offered?
For the worshipers, once purified, would have
had no more consciousness of sins.
literally; action noun, “the action of awareness of sins” “the action of a conscience producing a sense of sin-guilt”
It is a very big deal for us to have our consciences cleansed( cleared) of sin awareness on a regular basis.
We should not be practicing our beliefs in an ungodly manner,
but whenever we are practicing our beliefs in the holiness of God,
we experience true fellowship( koinonia) with one another, and we experience the finished atonement of Jesus Christ His Son who presently clears our conscience from all sense of sin-guilt.
4 LOOK FOR THE MANNER
NKJ Colossians 1:22
yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh
through death, to present you holy, and blameless,
and above reproach in His sight --
to present( to stand along side of before) [God]
you + 3 substantive adjectives
holy ones( set apart to God) quality noun
quality noun
and faultless ones( without blemish)
and beyond reproach( without fault) quality noun
in the presence of Him( God),
NKJ Jude 1:24
Now to Him who is able
to keep you from stumbling,
And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
We should not be practicing our beliefs
in an ungodly manner, but whenever we are practicing our beliefs
in the holiness of God, in the same manner that
Christ has made us to become
holy ones( set apart to God) in Christ,we experience true fellowship( koinonia) with one
another, and we experience the finished atonement
of Jesus Christ His Son who presently clears our
conscience from all sense of sin-guilt.
So.....
Do not tolerate the activity of the enemies of God,
who love to engage in deep-sea salvage work. They delight in dredging up whatever rusty sins
of your past they can find, then dragging them
to your doorstep. The enemies of God derive perverse joy from
ringing your doorbell, then running to hide in the
bushes, where they laugh and mock in anticipation
of you opening your door. And if you act in such a way as to take ownership
of that heap, by deciding to drag the trash inside
to the place where you live, they will howl with
gleeful delight. Because they know that once you’ve accepted
their “gift” and dragged it inside, you will just
sit there and stare at it. And the ugliness of it and its putrefied presence
will produce in you a devastating misery, and
give you a morbid sense of conscience
besmeared with raw filth. So, when those devils darken your doorstep with
their “gift from the pit”, call on the Lord
immediately; admit to Him that, “Yes, that’s
your old trash, but Christ already took care of
the removal-fee, having “paid it in full.” Then just watch that pile sprout wings and be
carried off and away, where it will be properly
dropped back into the depths of the sea again,
where God wants it to remain forever.
Many will be surprised on the Day of Judgment when they discover
that it was just as the Word of God says;
only the righteousness of Christ is able to save you.All men are sinners and no one can save himself.
God is just, so He must punish sin;
but He is also merciful, moreover gracious,
and offers His Son as the perfect sacrifice
in order to purchase a place for you in heaven,
which He offers to you as the free gift of eternal life.
Jesus is God Incarnate,
In order to pay the debt of our sins, He came from Heaven, having been sent by the Father,
where He lived a life of perfect obedience to the Father
even unto the shameful death upon the cross
in order to pay the debt of your sins. This gift must be received by faith,
believing that Jesus’ perfect life and Cross Work
was His complete and necessary Atonement
for your sins, in your behalf.
Faith is a gift that comes by the Power of God the Holy Spirit working in a person’s innermost being.
Only the power of God can open your heart to the willingness to have the void within it filled
with the presence of Christ by His Spirit. The Holy Spirit has the authority and power to quicken your dead spirit, to make it come to life.
Only the life of His Spirit’s quickening of your heart will allow the Gospel message of salvation to even make sense to you, to truly “hear” the message and give you the ability,
as the Holy Spirit bears witness to Jesus,
to recognize your need for forgiveness and restoration, and gain the desire of your heart to be favorably inclined to want to receive Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. If you have not done so before this moment,
ask Jesus to forgive you your sins,
tell Him you’ve stop trying to be your own savior,
and ask Him to come into your life right now,
and to give you eternal life. Then, in faith believing,
thank Him for the gift that He is giving you,
the one He paid for in full in your place,
in Jesus’ name,
AMEN
